During a live performance of Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5” at the Kennedy Center Honors on Dec. 3 (in front of an audience that included Dolly herself), Jessica Simpson flubbed a line and then left the stage in tears.

A rep for Jess insists her nerves and love for Dolly got the best of her, but an insider close to the Simpson clan tells Life & Style the problem goes deeper than that.

“Jessica’s been having a rough time lately,” says the insider. “Her album didn’t do well, and her movie was a flop. Her self-esteem is at an all-time low, and getting up there with Carrie Underwood had her nervous for days because Carrie’s been so successful — her album is at the top of the charts.”

After floundering onstage (reminiscent of little sis Ashlee’s lip-synching snafu on Saturday Night Live), Jess went backstage and was inconsolable, an insider says.

The insider says as Jess’ dad, Joe Simpson, tried calming her down, she told him to leave her alone because most of the negativity in her life is somehow linked to him.

Luckily Jess had a chance to re-tape her rendition of the song after the botched performance, and she even got a hug from Dolly out of it.

Poor Jess. Hey, everyone makes mistakes!

Jess is going through a hard time. I feel bad for her that she has to always hear about Nick and Vanessa and get compared all the time to other singers.

Jessica made a fool of her self. How can anyone feel sorry for her. By her own statements she hasn't been happier. She let go of the best thing she will ever have NICK. Nick has never looked happier. GO Nick and Vanessa.

She is supposed to be a professional. If she can't handle being up in front of a large audience then I don't know how she has ever done a concert. Plus I don't think she can sing that good anyway. She needs to listen to Christina to learn how to sing.

Come on people...you all know that this is a bunch of accusations...sure she was upset that the guy she has been sleeping is totally denying her after he slept with her.She was embarrased that she messed up in front of her idol.She was afaid to make that mistake so she ran.She's a normal person..

Leave the girl alone she has more talent then anyone writing these bashes. Everyone has had a bad day and she is entitled to them too. She has an amazing voice and a sweet way about her. Being in the spot light day after day has to be tough,and I feel she handles herself professionally and has nothing to be ashamed of.
