Life & Style can exclusively reveal Russell's role in the new film Lamb of God: He's set to play a recovering drug addict; the role mirrors his own struggle with addiction.

In the script obtained by Life & Style, Katy Perry's husband plays William, a bartender who is a reformed drug addict and also admits to being promiscuous
in his past.

In his memoir, My Booky Wook: A Memoir of Sex, Drugs and Stand-up, the British comic confessed to having spent much of his 20s trying to kick a heroin and crack-cocaine habit. He's also been treated for sex addiction.

Co-starring in the movie will be Julianne Hough, who plays the title character Lamb -- a woman hooked on the prescription drug Vicodin who leaves her sheltered life behind for Las Vegas to experience "sex, drugs, alcohol, gambling and all."

"All we can do is adapt the way we view this condition, not as a crime or a romantic affectation, but as a disease that will kill," Russell wrote about addiction in an open letter to the singer Amy Winehouse, which he posted on his blog after Amy died of alcohol poisoning in August. "We need to review the way society treats addicts, not as criminals but as sick people in need of care."

The movie is set for release in 2013.
