It's been a very trying time for Demi Moore. Just three days ago, the 49-year-old was rushed to the hospital from her Beverly Hills home and has since been admitted to treat "exhaustion" and her "overall health."
But as Life & Style has reported, the brunette beauty has been dealing with something much more serious: Her substance-abuse problems.
Now, her former publicist Michael Levine speaks with Life & Style about her long battle.
"It is horrible and sad, what has happened to her now," he tells Life & Style. "It points out the nature of addiction. You're always recovering, never fully recovered."
"I represented Demi when she was 19 years old, in the 1980s. She was beautiful, smart and wildly ambitious. At that time, she had a substance-abuse problem."
Since her admittance, reports have stated that the Ghost star was hospitalized after allegedly suffering from a seizure and doing whip-its, which are canisters of compressed nitrous oxide inhaled from whipped-cream dispensers.
"She needs to take care of herself now," Michael adds. "Work will always be there. I know Demi is still very ambitious, but she needs to let her work take a backseat while she heals."
Things seemed to take a turn for a worse for the actress after she filed for divorce from husband of six years, Ashton Kutcher, in November. This followed after weeks of speculation and reports that Ashton had cheated on her.
Since splitting with the Two and a Half Men star, Demi's stunning weight loss and hard partying have been causes for concern. Earlier this month, the mother of three joined her eldest daughter Rumer, 23, and Rumer's friends at the Roosevelt Hotel and Beacher's Madhouse in Hollywood.
But if one thing is important during this hard time, it's to have family and friends around, Michael says: "She needs that support and I hope she gets it."
And although she has dropped out of her most recent film project, the Linda Lovelace biopic Lovelace, Michael confides to Life & Style that her fans are very loyal to her and will stick by the actress.
"She has so many generations of fans who will support her no matter what," he says. "I think most people understand she has an addiction problem and feel for her."
Michael adds, "If I could tell her one thing right now, it would be that I will always love her and I wish her well."
