She starred in one of the biggest comedies of the year, but life wasn't always so great for Bridesmaids star Melissa McCarthy. The actress tells the new issue of Life & Style, on newsstands now, about being bullied before making her mark in Hollywood.
"I think everybody has had to deal with it to some degree or another," the 41-year-old actress and mother told Life & Style about bullying, at the Ivory VIP event at the Metropolitan Pavilion in NYC on Nov. 7. "Mine wasn't physical, but I think everyone's had an experience involving a group that seems cooler and makes you feel like you're less than you are," she says.
As a self-described "weird punk kid," Melissa says she wants her kids to accept everyone for who they are. "Every time we see someone or something different, I always try to say, 'Isn't that amazing?'" she tells Life & Style.
Melissa admits her family helped her stay strong and get through the tough times. "I had great parents," she says. "I probably cried in the bathroom, but I would come back out and just go on." As a parent herself, with husband Ben Falcone, the actress tells Life & Style she'll make sure her daughters Vivian, 4, and Georgette, 1, know how to handle bullies.
"I'm just going to tell my children a hundred times that a bully is not worth it," she tells Life & Style. "If you say that, hopefully your kid at some point will recall it and realize that maybe it's the bully who's insecure."
