He might play the gorgeous and sultry Christian Grey on the big screen, but Charlie Hunnam admits he never read Fifty Shades of Grey!
Hollyscoop caught up with the actor at the Sons of Anarchy season six premiere over the weekend, and he revealed he didn’t thumb through the pages before landing the role.
“I had not read the books, my girlfriend had read them so I knew of them, as everyone does,” he says. “As a member of the human race on Planet Earth you can’t not know about Fifty Shades of Grey.”
After it was announced that he and Dakota Johnson, who’s set to play his character’s counterpart, Anastasia Steele, landed the lead roles, fans were outraged — so outraged that they even made a petition asking for replacements!
The 33-year-old actor admits he questioned taking the role due to all the pressure to live up to fans’ expectations.
“I went through a long process with it, I wanted to really understand what it was all about before signing on and feel sure because he is such a beloved character and people are so fanatical about the character and his relationship [with Ana]. I wanted to feel sure that I could do him justice.”
Lo and behold, he was up for it.
“I spent a lot of time thinking about it and researching it and came to the conclusion that I was up to the challenge,” he shares.
Dakota was the only actress he auditioned with for the part. Producers were sold on their chemistry.
“[I] wanted to feel like [Christian Grey] was in my bones,” he told Entertainment Tonight in his first post-casting interview.
