From one funny man to the next!
Right on the heels of his big Late Night announcement, Seth Meyers chatted with Life & Style all about being Jimmy Fallon’s successor at the NBC Upfronts in NYC today. So what’s he’s most excited for?
“Putting together a staff,” he tells Life & Style. “What you learn at SNL is that you’re only as good as the people you surround yourself with, so that will be really fun.”
The comedian, who’s famous for hosting SNL’s Weekend Update, says he’ll be concentrating on his last season with the hit NBC sketch show before diving into Late Night.
“[Jimmy’s] mostly just said congratulations, which is really nice,” Seth said when we asked him if the former SNL star has given him any advice yet. “I’m lucky that the guy who had the job before me is a friend who’s only going to be a couple floors away when panic sets in.”
As Life & Style reported in April, Jimmy is set to take over The Tonight Show from Jay Leno in 2014.
Though he’s not exactly sure about which direction he’ll take the show in, Seth does reveal he won’t be doing the same show as his pal.
“I’m not starting from what he has. I’m sort of taking away from that,” he tells Life & Style. “I think I’m going to start with a blank canvas and add to it that way.”
Seth, 39, adds, “Obviously, I’m smart enough to know that there are many things in my skill set that don’t even come close to the same things in Jimmy’s skill set. I promise I won’t do anything worse than Jimmy – such as sing. When it comes to things like that, what I mean is that I’m not going to try and take on things that Jimmy does and try to make them better.”
What’s the secret behind his changing it up?
“You know, [Late Night] has been a format that’s been around for a really long time, so I’m not someone who’s coming in and going, ‘I’m going to build a better mousetrap,’” says the actor, who’s following in the footsteps of Jimmy, Conan O'Brien and David Letterman. “I hopefully will build a workingmouse trap.”
