The event was for ActionAid UK to raise awareness for an appalling kind of gendered violence that not many people in the western world know about. The southeast Asian country has the highest amount of these types of crimes (those statistics are from 2009, and don’t include deaths caused by attacks).

But why would someone throw acid on another person? For women, it often relates to a dowry, a romantic rejection, or a family or marital dispute. However, it also happens to a lot of very young girls, even some under the age of 18. Luckily, ActionAid UK is seeing a major reduction in attacks since they started cracking down. They’ve been working with the government in Bangladesh, and report that the number has decreased from 400 to 100 per year. Of course, there’s still work to do, but that’s major progress!
