'He Doesn't Tell Me What to Do'Shakira Clarifies Controversial Comments About Her Relationship With Boyfriend Gerard Piqué
Shakira is a strong and independent woman – regardless of her relationship with boyfriend and baby daddy Gerard Piqué.
In a new interview, the Colombian beauty clarifies recent statements she shared about their romance.
“Gerard doesn’t tell me what to do — we discuss everything as a couple, as I imagine most partners do,” she explains. “We have a beautiful relationship and one of mutual trust.”

In fact, The Voice coach was surprised so many people took her seriously when she called the 27-year-old soccer pro “territorial” and confessed “he no longer lets me do videos with men” in a recent interview with Billboard magazine. She followed up those comments by telling E! News, “I have rules, too. It’s two sides, you know. He can’t do stuff with models either!”
“It’s funny, when I made those comments, it was really in a lighthearted, humorous way,” she shares in her latest interview. “I was surprised to see that it was taken so seriously in the press.”
So what’s the secret to making their union work?
“In my house, I would say the balance of power is fairly equal. Relationships have to have a give and take if they’re going to work in the long term,” the 37-year-old proclaims.

Shakira also reveals how being a mom to the couple’s 15-month-old son, Milan, has changed her.
“Everything is different. Maybe the biggest change is that I think about the future more, what the world will be like for him when he grows up,” she tells the May/June issue of Ocean Drive magazine, in which she covers wearing a zebra-print dress. “But when it comes to living, it’s all about the present.”
And, of course, she opened up about that sexy music video for “Can’t Remember to Forget You” with Rihanna.
“It was a blast, honestly,” the blonde stunner says. “I’m sure on the outside it looks like two divas, but when we got together, we realized we had a lot in common — both Caribbean girls from small towns who are very down to earth when it comes down to it, and just enjoying having a good time.”
