What started off as a beautiful day quickly turned into a nightmare for this newly engaged couple.
Brad Parker, a 36-year-old yoga instructor, took his girlfriend, Jainee Dial, to the top of Cathedral Peak in Yosemite National Park on Saturday, where he got down on bended knee and proposed. She said yes.
“This is the happiest day of my life,” he told Dial, according to his father, Bill.

But just hours after they took the next step in their relationship, the unthinkable happened: Parker died after he plummeted 500 feet off a mountain.
According to reports, the fitness fanatic separated from his bride-to-be and ran three miles along Matthes Crest alone without any support. Climbers nearby saw Parker fall and alerted park rangers immediately.
When the park rangers arrived to the scene, they found his body. It was too late to get a helicopter, so they stayed with him until his body was carried out the next morning.
“We’re all so stunned. What happened is so unbelievable,” his father said, with friend Sarah McKay adding the veteran rock climber was “an amazing human being. Eternally positive… His whole life was about getting out and enjoying the world.”
Parker’s parents, Bill and Gayle, have flown to California from their home in Kauai, Hawaii to make funeral arrangements. They plan on having their son cremated. They’ll then spread some of his ashes at Yosemite, the Pacific Ocean along the Sonoma Coast and the ocean around Kauai.
Bill spoke exclusively with the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.
