In 2012, on Emily Maynard's season of The Bachelorette, Arie Luyendyk Jr. was a contestant. Arie wound up losing Emily to Jef Holm in the finale, but somehow, he's still in our lives five years later as next season's Bachelor.
ABC released the promo for the upcoming season, which airs in January 2018, and "hearts will race" apparently. At least that's what the network is telling us in the super quick promo (which, yes, features Arie zooming away in a race car).
So much time has gone by since Arie last graced us with his reality TV presence that most of us need to get reacquainted. Sure, you probably remember that he was a pretty decent dude on the Emily's season, but how much do you really recall about him? Here's everything you need to know about your new Bachelor.
He will likely propose to the final contestant on the show.
According to Bachelor Nation's Chris Bukowski, there's a very good chance Arie will get down on one knee. "It’s definitely a platform for it to happen more progressively," he told Life & Style exclusively.
It's really easy to follow him on Snapchat, Instagram, and Twitter.
You can find him @ariejr for all three accounts!
Cars are kind of his thing.
(Hence all the "racing" puns.) Arie himself is a race car driver, best known for competing in the Indy Lights Series, where he finished second, third, and fourth in the championship over the years. He also was named a test-driver in A1 Grand Prix. That said, despite the 35-year-old's association with fast cars, it's his father who's most well-known for the sport in the family. His dad, Arie Luyendyk, is a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner. Big shoes to fill.
He and Jef Holm are no longer BFF.
Despite once being "two peas in a pod," Jef and Arie are now anything but. Shortly after it was announced that the Arizona native would be the new Bachelor, Jef, who was buddies with Arie during Emily's season, took to Twitter to say how he really feels. After Bachelor creator Mike Fleiss made a comment about how the reaction to Arie has been positive — and Reality Steve retweeted it — Jef called Arie "disgusting" and eluded to the fact that he's far from a gentleman. The tweet has since been deleted, but Jef did leave up a simple: "Oh, the stories I could tell."
He wants to shed his "Playboy" reputation.
Arie, who earned the nickname "The Kissing Bandit" thanks to his frequent on-screen kisses with Emily, isn't exactly proud of his reputation. Former Bachelor Sean Lowe recently told Life & Style that he "wants to get away from being seen as just a dude who wants to make out."
He may not have been an actual bachelor all that long.
According to numerous reports — and one very incriminating Instagram — Arie had a girlfriend named Sydney Stempfley... who he allegedly broke up with two days before he was announced as the new Bachelor. Chances are he'll deny it, but this photo that Sydney posted to Instagram might beg to differ.
Let's just say, he's got some money in the bank.
The blue-eyed charmer's got an impressive bank account. Arie Luyendyk Jr.'s net worth is estimated at $4 million. Not too shabby.
He also dated Courtney Robertson ... who said he's great in bed.
Apparently, the race car driver has been involved on and off again for years with Bachelor villain — and winner! — Courtney Robertson. Courtney, who won Ben Flajnik's season, even wrote about her time with Arie in her 2014 memoir, I Didn't Come Here to Make Friends: Confessions of a Reality Show Villain. In her book, she says that Arie was "the best sex she's ever had." The reason? "Arie’s incredibly passionate and utilizes his entire body in his lovemaking. And he knows exactly what positions make a woman feel comfortable and satisfied." Well, OK then.
He's sells real estate.
In addition to racing cars and having sex, Arie is into real estate. In 2016, he became a real estate agent in his home state of Arizona. "Add Real Estate mogul to the résumé! Passed the AZ Real Estate exam!" he tweeted after it became official. Actually, some say that Courtney, who's a real estate agent as well, got Arie into it.
He's one of the older bachelors.
Fans are wondering how old Arie is due to his salt and pepper hair — and to clear up any confusion, the dude turns 36 on Sept. 18. Compare that to Ben Higgins, who was only 26 when he was the leading man in Season 20 and that is one large age gap.
He speaks Dutch.
Though he lives in Phoenix now, Arie moved to the United States from the Netherlands when he was two. During his hometown date with Emily, the nation watched as he spoke to his family in Dutch, saying that "everything is perfect" with Emily. If his bilingual skills don't raise his stock a bit, not sure what does!
