11 New TV Shows You’ll Need to Binge-Watch This Fall

While we may be taking our first steps into summer, the television networks are doing their best to turn our attention to the fall with 20 new TV series announced — and some of them actually sound pretty great.

There's reboots like the CW’s Dynasty or NBC’s revival of Will and Grace, and even a prequel to TV’s current biggest hit The Big Bang Theory, with Young Sheldon.

Superheroes are ruling the big screen (this summer alone features Guardians Of The Galaxy, Vol. 2, Wonder Woman and Spider-Man: Homecoming), so why shouldn’t the small screen get in on the fun? Fox has got The Gifted, set in the world of the X-Men; then there’s Marvel’s Inhumans for ABC, which is about a royal family of alien superbeings forced to call Earth their new home.

If drama is your preference, it’s there with CBS’s SEAL Team, starring David Boreanaz (who just left the airwaves after 12 seasons on Bones); or you can check out a bit of sci-fi comedy on Fox in Seth MacFarlane’s (he’s the guy who created Family Guy and Ted) The Orville. And it seems like we’re in store for something really special in what looks like a dramedy on CBS, Me, Myself And I.

It wouldn’t hurt to take a sneak peek at the shows voted most likely to be binged — so get ready to set your DVR, because you aren't going to want to miss these!

Fall tv dynasty

Dynasty (CW)

Eighties excess is back… or at least the CW is hoping that it is. The battle between the Carringtons and the Colbys—two of this country’s richest fictional families—begin anew in this reboot, which centers on two women and a struggle over (what else?) their family money. Says the CW, “The series will be told primarily through the perspectives of two women at odds: Fallon Carrington, daughter of billionate Blake Carrington, and her soon-to-be stepmother, Cristal, a Hispanic woman marrying into this WASP family and America’s most powerful class.” Normally we’d want to avoid this one. Let’s face it, the original took itself so seriously that it eventually crashed under the weight of its own growing campiness. But this version seems to know exactly what it is, and takes on that camp full force. You watch the trailer waiting for the first sign of a slap fight between the two women… and then it happens! We may apologize for recommending this one later, but, hey, you don’t know where we live.

Fall tv the gifted

The Gifted (Fox)

Mutants are everywhere these days, most visibly identified on the big screen by X-Men characters like Wolverine, Deadpool and the students of Professor Xavier. But the genetically enhanced are making their way to television as well, first on FX’s Legion, and now on this new series, The Gifted. Firmly set in the X-Men Universe, the show is created by Fargo’s Matt Nix and is focused on a family on the run when parents discover that their children are mutants. Trying to escape the government, they join up with an underground community of mutants. This big budget adventure stars Amy Acker and Stephen Moyer as the parents, with Natalie Alyn Lind (you may recognize her from The Goldbergs) and Percy Hynes White as their little mutants… we mean, kids.

Fall tv the good doctor

The Good Doctor (ABC)

When you’ve spent five years being a serial killer and you’ve murdered your mother to assumer her persona, what do you do for an encore? If you’re Freddie Highmore, you trade your kitchen knife in for a scalpel and move over from Bates Motel to The Good Doctor. In it, he plays a surgeon with autism and savant syndrome who becomes a part of the surgical unit in a prestigious hospital. Notes the network, “Alone in the world and unable to personally connect with those around him, Shaun uses his extraordinary medical gifts to save lives and challenge the skepticism of his colleagues.” Hey, we’ve seen this guy in action, and he definitely knows how to wield a blade….That is a good thing, right?

Fall tv gospel of kevin

The Gospel Of Kevin (ABC)

Okay, admittedly this one could very easily dip into the arena of diabetic-inducing schmaltz, but there is something so incredibly endearing about Jason Ritter (a quality his late father, John, had as well). It makes us want to come along for this particular journey that he’s on. His character is Kevin Finn, a guy who has lived a life of self-centeredness, but discovers that everything is about to change. It seems he’s one of 36 people to have been chosen to save the world “one hug at a time” (according to the network), and to get on the road of enlightenment he’s paired up with a celestial being named Yvette. We’re putting our faith in this one (see what we did there?).

Fall tv law and order true crime

Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders (NBC)

Let’s face it, you can’t kill the Law & Order franchise with a stick, probably because executive producer Dick Wolf has spent over two decades constantly reinventing the franchise. Well, he’s at it again with the dramatization of the Menendez Brothers and the murder of their parents that rocked the country throughout the early 1990s. Given last year’s success of American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson, Wolf could be on to something here. Dun dun.

Fall tv marvels inhumans

Marvel’s Inhumans (ABC)

You have to give Marvel Studios credit for originality. Not only have they built an empire on the big screen in less than a decade since the 2008 release of Iron Man, but they’re conquering the small screen as well by taking the same kind of chances. This show is a perfect example, its two-hour premiere being released theatrically exclusively in IMAX theaters for two weeks prior to the start of the eight-episode first season. Marvel notes that the show will tell the story of the genetically enhanced royal family of Inhumans, which is splintered by a military coup and are barely able to escape to Earth in general, Hawaii in particular: “Their surprising interactions with the lush world and humanity around them may prove to not only save them, but Earth itself.” We’ve got no choice but to believe that any show being kicked off in this manner has got to be worth binging on.

Me, Myself And I (CBS)

In a world of sequels, prequels and reboots, do you have any idea how hard it is to find an original idea? Of course you do. But prepare yourself, because this could actually be one. The lead character is Alex, and each episode allows us to watch his life unfold in three distinct time periods: 1991 when he’s 14, 2017 when he’s 40 and 2042 when he’s 65, played respectively by Jack Dylan Grazer, Saturday Night Live’s Bobby Moynihan and veteran comedian John Larroquette. This is definitely one to watch…or DVR… or stream. Hey, do whatever rocks your boat, but check it out.

The Orville (Fox)

It was inevitable that Seth MacFarlane would eventually make his way to live action television, having more than conquered the world of prime time animation with the long-running Family Guy and American Dad, and the big screen with his CG stuffed buddy comedy Ted (not to mention its sequel, but let’s not even bring up A Million Ways To Die In The West—oh, crap, we just did). And considering his deep love for the Star Trek franchise, it’s even less surprising that his vehicle to do so would be a humorous take on Trek. Coming this fall is The Orville, described by Fox as “a one-hour, live-action ensemble comedic drama set 400 years in the future that follows the adventures of the U.S.S. Orville, a mid-level exploratory vessel.” This starship consists of a crew featuring a mix of humans and aliens who “face the wonders and dangers of outer space, while also dealing with the familiar, often humorous problems of regular people in a workplace…even though some of those people are from other planets, and the workplace is a faster-than-light spaceship.” The setting is the 25th Century, and Earth is a part of the Planetary Union, a fairly peaceful civilization with a fleet of 3,000 ships. This one promises plenty of laughs, but is not actually a spoof; it just happens to feature a dysfunctional group of characters led by McFarlane himself.

SEAL Team (CBS)

In an effort to reflect what they believe to be a more patriotic feeling in the country, the networks went crazy for military dramas this coming season, and this one seems to be a stand out. It focuses on both the personal and professional lives of an upper echelon of Navy SEALs as they “train, plan and execute the most dangerous, high stakes missions our country can ask of them.” One of the biggest draws of SEAL Team is, admittedly, actor David Boreanaz. There are few actors with the kind of track record that this guy has. He spent three years on Buffy the Vampire Slayer as the vampire Angel, an additional five on his own spin-off and then 12 years as FBI agent Seeley Booth on Bones. The audience loves this guy, and the extended trailer for this one gives every indication that that love affair will continue.

Fall tv will and grace

Will & Grace (NBC)

We will be the first to admit that most of these reboots have not worked, from The X-Files to The Gilmore Girls, and that we’re finding it tough to work up too much excitement for American Idol (c’mon, it just went off the air) or Roseanne. Part of the reason could be that the reason these shows went off the air in the first place is that they had run out of creative steam. The same might very well be said for Will & Grace, but there was an undeniable something there when the cast got together last year for a 10-minute online political episode that saw Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Megan Mullally and Sean Hayes step back into their roles without having missed a beat. And it’s still there in the recently released extended musical trailer for the series from NBC, so we’re willing to bet (not money, of course) that it could work. This one is really going to rise and fall on the strength of the scripts.

Fall tv young sheldon

Young Sheldon (CBS)

News of this prequel to The Big Bang Theory was initially greeted with a great deal of skepticism with people seeing it as little more than an opportunity to cash in on the success of the original series and the popularity of Jim Parsons’ Sheldon Cooper. But anyone who’s seen the trailer for the show, can see that there is a lot more to it than that. Iain Armitage is nine-year-old Sheldon, growing up in East Texas and separated from everyone around him by his brilliance. Says CBS, “While the vulnerable, gifted, and somewhat naive Sheldon deals with the world, his very normal family must find a way to deal with him.” Parsons narrates the series, which will be airing right after The Big Bang Theory this fall, pretty much guaranteeing a one-two comic punch.
