We were all stunned by Beyoncé’s performance of "Star-Spangled Banner" during President Obama’s inauguration on Jan. 21–but we were even more stunned to find out that the superstar was possibly lip-syncing! “We don’t know why Beyoncé decided to use prerecorded music,” a spokesperson for the Marine Corps says. “The Marine Band did perform live throughout the ceremony but we received last-minute word that Beyoncé wanted to use the recording.”
However, in a second statement, the spokesperson says, "The Presidential Inaugural Committee requested that the Marine Band accompany Beyonce Knowles-Carter in the performance of the Star-Spangled Banner at the 2013 Inaugural Ceremony. However, there was no opportunity for Ms. Knowles-Carter to rehearse with the Marine Band before the Inauguration so it was determined that a live performance by the band was ill-advised for such a high-profile event. Each piece of music scheduled for performance in the Inauguration is pre-recorded for use in case of freezing temperatures, equipment failure, or extenuating circumstances. Regarding Ms. Knowles-Carter's vocal performance, no one in the Marine Band is in a position to assess whether it was live or pre-recorded."

Recorded or not, we know Bey can sing! And besides—she wouldn't be the first one to mouth her words. Check out the list we put together of the industry's most notorious lip-syncers: Ashlee Simpson: Jessica’s little sister had a bright future ahead of her as a singer—or at least it looked that way until she was blatantly caught lip-syncing during a performance on Saturday Night Live. Arguably the best moment in lip-syncing history, Ashlee later made it clear that the incident was everyone else’s fault but hers. Among the blamed: a “computer glitch,” her band and her cold. Britney Spears: It’s pretty much known fact that Britney prefers to mouth her famous songs. But if anyone wasn’t aware, it was Miss Spears’ fans in Australia. When the “Scream and Shout” singer went down under for the first time in 2009 on her Circus Tour, critics were outraged by Britney's failure to sing live. Unexpectedly, John Mayer quickly came to Brit’s defense, tweeting: "If you're shocked that Britney was lip-syncing at her concert and want your money back, life may continue to be hard for you."

Lindsay Lohan: The controversial starlet stirred up drama in her pre-DUI days–by lip-syncing! LiLo gave a debut performance of her hit “Rumors” on Good Morning America in 2004. She was hit hard by critics who claimed she was miming, but Lindsay refuted the accusations, saying, “The main concern for me was I wanted to sing songs that, when I sing live, sound the same.” Milli Vanilli: All hail the kings of lip-syncing! 80’s pop duo Mill Vanilli went so far as to win a Grammy—for voices that weren’t even their own! Once caught, the Recording Academy confiscated their award and the group was shunned forever from the music industry.
