Note to self: don't lie on social media because you will most likely get caught and made to look a fool in front of thousands of people!

That's the lesson rapper Bow Wow learned on Tuesday, May 9, after leading fans to believe he was taking a private jet to NYC, but was photographed flying commercial instead.

"Travel day. NYC press run for Growing Up Hip Hop. Lets gooo. I promise to bring yall the hottest show EVER. May 25th on @wetv," the 30-year-old captioned an Instagram pic of a private plane with expensive cars parked on the tarmac.

Problem is, the CSI: Cyber star was photographed just hours later sitting on a commercial flight to NYC. At least it appears he flew first class.

Needless to say, social media had a field day after the lie was exposed. "That Tokyo Drift money must've ran out," one person commented on Instagram, while another said, "Did you call window seat or did the guy next to you switch?"

What makes matters even worse is that the image Bow Wow posted is actually a stock photo taken from a website that provides VIP transportation services, as one diligent Twitter follower observed.

The blunder has since inspired the hashtag #BowWowChallenge, for which users are posting pics of themselves in fake scenarios.

While it might seem bizarre that the "Let Me Hold You" singer has yet to take the post down and is letting himself get roasted on every picture he's put up since, apparently it was all part of some plan.

On Wednesday, May 10, a preview of Bow Wow's visit to the radio show Ebro in the Morning was released on Instagram. When asked about the whole debacle, the rapper implied that this was some sort of stunt leading up to a movie? Or a show?

When the host asked who took the photo of him flying commercial, he replied, "I could've been on a set! You gotta watch bro! May 25th, you gotta watch — there's a method to my madness."

While that kind of explains why he hasn't taken the picture down, we find the whole thing pretty stupid. Do you buy his explanation?
