Lance Armstrong may not have many supporters on his side as of late, but there’s an A-lister who thinks he’s “fascinating” and wants to bring his story to the big screen: Bradley Cooper.
“I would be interested in [playing Armstrong],” Bradley told BBC News. “I think he’s fascinating. What a fascinating character.”
J.J. Abrams, who’s best known for co-creating the hit ABC show Lost, is reportedly developing a movie about the disgraced cyclist. It’s said to be based on New York Times sportswriter Juliet Macur’s upcoming book Cycle of Lies: The Fall of Lance Armstrong.
“I remember Matt Damon was going to do [Armstrong’s] autobiography at one point years ago,” Bradley Cooper shares. “I remember thinking, that would be a great character, I’d love to play that character. I would love to do something, I think he’s pretty fascinating.”
This comes on the heels of Lance’s shocking interview with Oprah Winfrey where he admitted he used performance enhancing drugs throughout his career.
And while we think Bradley is a pretty good candidate, here are a few other guys we could see up for the role:
Jake Gyllenaal: If there’s anyone who knows Lance’s cycling style, it’s this guy. The good pals used to ride together—even being photographed doing so along the Malibu coast in 2006. Plus, this guy knows how to act…something tells us it could be an Oscar-buzzworthy performance.
Matthew McConaughey: We already know how serious he takes his role—he recently dropped 38 pounds to play an AIDS victim in The Dallas Buyer's Club! Not to mention he was pretty close with the athlete (remember those buff pics of the pair working out together back in the day?) and even recently spoke out about Lance’s confession: “My first reaction was I was pissed off. I was mad. I then got kind of sad for him.”
Brad Pitt: We think Angelina Jolie’s fiancé would really bring a dramatic spin to the role. We wouldn’t mind seeing Brad in those tight cycling shorts either!
Matt Damon: Now that Bradley mentioned it, Matt could bring some edge to the part—he is an Oscar winner, after all! In 2010, it was reported that he was set to play Lance in a biopic about his last Tour de France championship—a different movie than the one reportedly being made now. Will Matt still be up for the role or even considered? Time will only tell!
Who do you think should play Lance? Do you think Bradley would do the part justice?
