Apparently good looks and sports don’t mix — according to some obviously wrong critics.
Seventeen-year-old volleyball player Sabina Altynbekova, who plays for Kazakhstan, has set off a media storm because of her beauty.
Critics say she serves (pun intended) as a distraction to the game. What’s worse is that even her coach, Nurlan Sadikov, agrees!
“It is impossible to work like this,” the coach told Tengrin News. The Daily Mail translated the comment. “The crowd behaves like there is only one player at the championship.”
The frenzy began after a recent tournament in Taiwan. Fans of the sport quickly noticed Sabina and became infatuated with the teen girl. A YouTube video of the brunette beauty high-fiving her teammates, playing the game and even just standing around has already garnered more than 1.5 million views.
The Straits-Times also reported that Taiwanese fans were holding Kazakhstan fans and showed up an hour early to catch a glimpse of the girl.
But Sabina isn’t exactly thrilled with the attention. "I was flattered at first but it's all getting a little bit much," she said. "I want to concentrate on playing volleyball and to be famous for that, not anything else."
To the critics, we’d like to point out how many ridiculously, ridiculously good-looking have played sports: Tom Brady, Anna Kournikova, David Beckham…need us to keep going?
So, no, there is no such thing as being too beautiful to play sports. (We’re just lucky enough to enjoy watching some games with seriously stunning eye candy.)
