Shortly after Britney Spears had her infamous meltdown in 2007, the pop princess was placed under a strict conservatorship controlled by her father.

But in the midst of her current court battle with former manager Sam Lufti, people close to the 34-year-old singer are speaking out against the guardianship, including her ex-boyfriend David Lucado.

“If anyone knew the real Britney, they would know that she would rather be remembered for being the great mother she is rather than the artist she is,” he said in an interview with the New York Times. “And if anyone could see her interactions with her kids, they would know that there is no need for a conservatorship over Britney’s personal life.”

The former couple dated for a year and a half before breaking up in 2015 following rumors he cheated on the mother-of-two.

Joining him in Britney’s corner is one of her lawyers, Adam Streisand, who also thinks she’s fully capable of standing on her own.

“It was clear to me that she seemed a bit agitated,” he said. “Britney wanted to oppose the conservatorship. But she was also extremely worried about her kids and seemed to understand that the best thing to do to see her kids was to accept it.”

Britney Spears has come a long way since 2007.

Under her conservatorship, Britney’s father, Jamie Spears, controls all aspects of her business and personal life, including any financial decisions.

In the past, the blonde beauty has compared her legal situation to a prison. “There’s no excitement, there’s no passion,” she said. “Even when you go to jail, you know there’s the time when you’re going to get out. But in this situation, it’s never-ending.”
