It was a sad night on Tuesday's Dancing With the Stars when hopeful Dorothy Hamill revealed she'd be leaving the competition.
And like viewers, the former pro figure skater says her castmates were just as surprised by her resignation.
When we caught up with the 56-year-old after all was said and done, she told Life & Style that no one knew she was gearing up to say goodbye.
"It was very disappointing," she tells Life & Style about her tough decision. "I wasn't able to even try to learn the Jive until two days ago."

Right before hosts Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke revealed which star would be voted off — it came down between Housewife Lisa Vanderpump and boxer Victor Ortiz — Dorothy ran on to the stage to announce that, on orders from her doctor, she had to withdraw from the competition due to a recent injury.
"I have an injury that could be irreparable," she shares with Life & Style. "It would be completely unfair for me to stay in this and have any of these people go home."
She explains, "I have a synovial cyst on the lumbar spine," adding how she'll treat it, "Surgery is the last resort....probably a lot of physical therapy and exercises."
Her partner, Tristan McManus, has been nothing but supportive. He says, "I was relieved because I think it was the right decision to do."
POLL: Were you surprised by her resignation?
"It just isn't fair for me to put Tristan through this and everyone else through this who really want to go on," Dorothy confides to Life & Style. "I don't want to risk the permanent nerve damage."
Now that she's out of the running for the Mirror Ball Trophy, who is the Olympian rooting for?
“I just love to see the evolution of people like Andy [Dick] and Wynona and Kelly [Pickler]. Zendaya, she's just a star! DL [Hughley], yeah. Jacoby [Jones]," she tells the mag. "For different reasons, I'm sort of rooting for all of them! And, I love Lisa Vanderpump.”E

And she definitely made an impression on her castmates.
"Love Dorothy Hamill so sad to see her go,we became super close.." Lisa shared following Dorothy's dismissal, with pro dancer Derek Hough adding, "Get well Dorothy. Your health is number one. You are a class act , and will always be a champion!"
This much is certain — don't count Dorothy out from hitting the dance floor again in the future. She tells Life & Style, "I'd do it [again] in a heartbeat!"
