Ellen DeGeneres and wife Portia de Rossi are working on their marriage after a particularly rough patch that saw the longtime couple get into heated arguments in front of the talk show host’s staff.

A source tells Life & Style that The Ellen Show crew would often overhear the duo’s fights. “Ellen hates that. She never wants people at work to know about her personal problems,” the source reveals. “It was a huge wake-up call for her.”

To mend their broken relationship, the pair has been seeing a therapist. “Ellen has been in counseling, both solo and with Portia,” the insider shares. “Part of their therapy is to go on more date nights. That’s why they’ve been seen out and about more together lately.”

The actors were photographed holding hands at a pre-Oscars party in LA on Feb. 25, and were spotted shopping along Melrose Avenue earlier that week. “It’s all about spending quality time together, but still giving each other space during the workday,” the source explains. “Portia and Ellen are trying to be more like most busy working couples, who have to make time to see each other.”

The comedienne shot down divorce rumors in October, telling People magazine, “I’m grateful for everything. I’m grateful for my health, and I’m so grateful for the love in my life. Because not everybody finds that. Not everybody finds that best friend.”

She added, “I can’t imagine not being married. I have my best friend, the person I want to spend time with more than anybody else in the world… Portia and I constantly say to each other, ‘We are so lucky.’ Sometimes it’s lying in bed at night before I go to sleep, and I just say thank you to whatever, whoever is out there. I’ve gotten to a place where I really am just settled… She’s not going anywhere.”
