A horrific fire broke out in the 24-story Grenfell Tower block in North Kensington, London last night.

It has been confirmed that at least 12 people have died and over 50 people are currently in hospital being treated following the terrifying incident. The fire reportedly started after 1 a.m. this morning [Wednesday, June 14] on the fourth floor and the death toll is expected to rise throughout the day.

The fire department is still attempting to extinguish the blaze that has engulfed the majority of the building.

One eyewitness who was close by has said that she saw a woman inside the building attempt to save a baby by dropping it from a window “on the ninth or tenth floor” to members of the public waiting below.

The lady spoke about the moment she saw the woman inside the tower block drop the baby out of the window. She told HuffPost: “There were screeches and there was someone gesturing that there was a lady at the window. As I looked up, a lady was frantically gesturing and screaming that she was about to throw her baby.

“She wrapped it in a sheet and threw the young baby out the window. And a member of the public, a young guy ran forward and miraculously grabbed it at the right moment. And the shadow of what I’m assuming is the mother went backwards and that’s the last we saw.”

The same woman that spoke to HuffPost also spoke to the publication news.com.au and said after the man caught the baby from the window “people were cheering and screaming at the same time.”

The people inside the tower have been desperately trying to escape the building with eyewitnesses saying they’ve seen people attempt to jump from windows and screaming for help. There are currently over 250 firefighters at the scene still attempting to put the flames out.

The fire has been so big that people in Surrey — in the next county — could see the smoke from the building.

Commander Stuart Cundy, of the Metropolitan Police, said at the time: “I can confirm six fatalities at this time but this figure is likely to rise during what will be a complex recovery operation over a number of days. Many others are receiving medical care.”
