Well, his band did!
They’re winning together in love, but when it comes to MTV’s Artist of the Year, Harry Styles and his band One Direction have the edge over girlfriend Taylor Swift.
For 2012, One Direction landed in the No. 1 spot with Taylor following closely behind in second.
“We want to thank you, MTV for all your support. You've supported us from very early on. And a massive thank you to all the fans. This wouldn't be possible without you, so thank you once again. This is amazing and we'll see you soon,” Harry says.

So how did the guys nab the big honor? With two No. 1 albums, Up All Night and Take Me Home, and hits like "What Makes You Beautiful" — which was listed at No. 4 on MTV’s Song of the Year list — and "Live While We’re Young." Oh, and a sold out world tour certainly helped!
“MTV, we cannot thank you enough. Artist of the Year, it is an absolute honor. We've had an amazing year and this is the icing on the cake, so thank you so much,” One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson says.
As for Taylor, her hit song “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” landed in the No. 6 spot on the Song of the Year list.

Other notable mentions include Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” as Song of the Year and fans voting Demi Lovato for having the most passionate fan army.
But we’re pretty sure Taylor’s not too upset about losing out to her boyfriend’s band. Harry and Taylor spent her 23rd birthday in England on Dec. 13 — where Harry bought her 23 cupcakes to commemorate each of the years she’s lived!
Talk about a sweetheart.
