Beyoncé and Jessica Simpson are two of the many celebrities who have recently hopped on the vegan diet bandwagon -- a diet that can be dangerous if one becomes obsessed with it.
And the blogger behind the popular website The Blonde Vegan is proof of that.
Two years ago, Jordan Younger embarked on a vegan life, which means she only consumed plant-based items.
She launched her Instagram account in June 2013 and quickly gained a huge following of more than 70,000 people. These 70,000 people looked to her for advice on clean living, which she more than happily provided. But her obsession with veganism began controlling her life.
"Food was not enjoyable anymore," reveals the now 23-year-old, who stopped getting her period and often felt sluggish a year into the drastic lifestyle change. "I was spending the entire day obsessing about eating only vegetables, green juices, fruits and occasionally nuts and grains. I was following thousands of rules in my head that were making me sick."
The 5-foot-4 social media personality, who weighed 105 pounds at her lowest, explains she suffered from what doctors called "othorexia," a “fixation on righteous eating,” according to NationalEatingDisorders.org.
Though she doesn't fully blame her website for the disorder, she does admit it masked the issue.
"My blog made it hard for me to see that I had an eating disorder," she said. "If I wasn't so closely tied to the vegan identity I'd given myself, I would have realized it a lot sooner. I was following thousands of rules in my head that were making me sick."
After speaking to a friend who was recovering from an eating disorder, she noticed too many similarities and sought out help.
Since deciding to part ways with her vegan diet, she has lost thousands of followers and received death threats from vegans and animal rights activists. But she's intent on delivering a healthy message to her devoted fan base.
She even renamed The Blonde Vegan to The Balanced Blonde.
"I think labels – as far as diet choices – are very, very dangerous," she explains. "I'm a prime example of that."
