It’s been nearly one week since Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc along the east coast. Areas in New York and New Jersey were hit the worst, leaving thousands of people homeless and, even worse, the storm claimed more than 100 victims.
It was one of the most devastating natural disasters to ever happen in the area, and now celebrities and people across the country are making sure to pitch in to help the relief effort.
Two nights ago, some of music and television’s biggest names banded together to raise money for a Hurricane Sandy benefit on NBC. Hosted by Today show anchor Matt Lauer, stars like Jimmy Fallon, Jon Stewart, Whoopi Goldberg and Tina Fey stopped by to show their support. Christina Aguilera, Billy Joel, Steven Tyler, Jon Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Mary J. Blige and Sting were all on hand to perform touching musical tributes to those affected by the massive storm.
And this powerful star force raised $23 million! “We are incredibly grateful and humbled by this outpouring of support for those who are suffering,” the Red Cross’ Chief Marketing Officer Peggy Dyer said in a statement on Saturday. “Our preliminary results of nearly $23 million raised are an extraordinary example of how the American people pull together in times of disaster.”
