Chip and Joanna Gaines have one of the strongest marriages in showbiz, and now it’s easy to see why — they have great role models! The Fixer Upper star’s parents celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary last year, and as a tribute to their love story, Joanna took to Instagram to share a sweet post.

“Happy 45th Anniversary to these two!” Jo wrote in June. “My parents met in 1969 when my dad was stationed in Korea and their story is one you hear about in the movies. All the odds were against them but they fought through and became an example of how to love, fight for, extend grace to, and honor each other amidst all their many differences. Here’s to many more years!” BRB, crying!

Jerry and Nan met at a party in Seoul, Korea, and Jo explained that it was love at first sight. “Interesting enough, the way my mother tells it, she spotted my dad sitting off by himself in a corner at that party and said to a friend of hers, ‘That’s the man I’m going to marry,'” Joanna wrote in her book, The Magnolia Story. “Her friends thought she was crazy, but she says she just knew.”

Yet life wasn’t always picture-perfect for the couple. They fought — a lot. “From what they’ve told me, they actually had a rocky marriage for several years,” Joanna wrote. “There were times, they say, when they didn’t think they would make it because all they did was fight.”

Things turned around, however, after Jerry’s mother passed away. “He envisioned himself in a casket, with his family surrounding him, and it hit him just how wrongly he was living his life,” Joanna continued. “He knew he didn’t want to end up in that casket the way he envisioned, leaving my mom alone to fend for herself.” After that epiphany, Jerry landed a job at a Firestone tire store in Waco, TX, where Joanna would later meet Chip.

These days, Jerry and Nan are still living in Waco, where Nan frequently leads prayer groups at Magnolia Market. They’re also busy grandparents, and will soon be grandparents to two more babies thanks to Joanna and her sister’s growing families! The HGTV star revealed she’s expecting baby No. 5 with her hubby and her sister just gave birth to baby No. 6 on Jan. 4. Congrats to the beautiful family!
