We Still Love ‘500 Days of Summer’ — Even If Joseph Gordon-Levitt Thinks Tom Is “Selfish”

It's been nearly one decade since we first watched Tom and Summer's relationship crumble in 500 Days of Summer — and it's still our favorite non-love story ever. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel are perfect as the ill-fated couple, and Joseph understands why viewers might blame his character for their breakup.

"I would encourage anyone who has a crush on my character to watch it again and examine how selfish he is," he told Playboy magazine at the time of the film's release. "He develops a mildly delusional obsession over a girl onto whom he projects all these fantasies. He thinks she’ll give his life meaning because he doesn’t care about much else going on in his life….That's not healthy."

He continued, "A lot of boys and girls think their lives will have meaning if they find a partner who wants nothing else in life but them," JGL concluded. "That’s not healthy. That’s falling in love with the idea of a person, not the actual person." While he does have a point about Tom, that doesn't mean fans are still not watching the movie — along with it's iconic dance sequence — any chance they get.

"I’ll never get sick of 500 Days of Summer," one person recently tweeted before another added, "Only DM me if u have 500 Days of Summer on DVD, no other applicants needed." Same girl, same. So, does Zooey believe in true love all these years later? "Well, I'm married so of course I believe in true love! A lot of romantic comedies end right when people get together so you don't really know what happens with them," she told The Guardian.
