After Selena Gomez made her bombshell announcement on Sept. 14 that she had undergone a secret kidney transplant this summer because of her battle with the autoimmune disease lupus, her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber reached out to see how she was doing. A source exclusively tells Life & Style that Selena’s health crisis inspired JB, 23, to apologize for the mistakes he made during their tumultuous relationship.
“He was shocked” by the surgery news, the insider says. “He called [Selena’s mom] Mandy [Teefey] to find out what was going on, and said he wanted to be there for Selena. Justin told Mandy he’s truly sorry for the way he treated Selena when they were dating and that he’s grown up a lot since then.”

The former couple hadn’t spoken in more than a year. But after Selena, 25, caught wind of Justin’s call, the “Same Old Love” songstress decided that it was finally time to put their troubled past behind them for good. “Selena decided it was time to forgive Justin,” says the source. Another source tells Life & Style that the Disney Channel alum texted the Biebs and, since then, “they’ve been texting [more], talking, and even making plans to meet up.”
According to the source, Selena believes the silver lining of her surgery was her reconciliation with Justin. “She’s happy something positive came out of this awful situation with her kidney transplant,” says the insider. “It’s brought her and Justin back together again.”
Since they called it quits, the pair — who began their on-off relationship in 2010 — have both made huge changes in their lives. Selena spent time in rehab to deal with issues including depression and anxiety, while Justin canceled his world tour this summer and rededicated himself to his Christian faith. “They’ve both realized life is too short to hold grudges,” says the source.
Selena, who is currently dating The Weeknd, “is telling friends she believes she and Justin are adults now and can finally be friends,” adds the insider. “Selena doesn’t want to jeopardize her relationship with The Weeknd. But she still cares about Justin as a person and wants to see him. She believes it’s important to forgive.”
