Lena Dunham Finally Addresses Jack Antonoff Split — “Love Is a Cool, Eternal Thing”
Hollywood's quirkiest couple has called it quits! Lena Dunham and Jack Antonoff have been dating since 2012, but on Jan. 9 she admitted that they have broken up — in the traditional sense, at least. "I'm wearing this ring that Jack gave me and I'll always wear it, because love is a really cool, powerful, eternal thing and it doesn't have to be defined the way we in Western culture define it as beginnings and ends," she said in an Instagram video to fans.
"Things can be 'you're a drop of water and you re-enter the ocean,'" she went on to explain. "Anyway, I really love you all and I'm really thankful for the support, really thankful for the love." E! News first reported that that they've decided to go their separate ways and end their relationship on Jan. 8.
"It was mutual," said the insider of the alleged December split. "Jack and Lena were growing apart and it just made sense for them to end their relationship where it was. They want the best for each other no matter what. They are both moving on."
The duo last appeared on social media together on Oct. 29, when Lena posted a cuddly photo with her beau with the caption "Since I dyed my hair blue he sings a song about how I am a troll looking for some troll snacks and troll friends and he's not wrong." On Oct. 23, Lena posted a photo with her man with the caption "Our 5.5 year anniversary was yesterday. Still working hard to impress him in surprising ways." Apparently, that hard work just wasn't enough. There are still several photos of Jack on Lena's Instagram, but there's not a trace of her on his.
Perhaps Lena's many, many controversies in 2017 put undue pressure on their relationship. Most recently she came under fire for defending Girls producer Murray Miller after a young actress accused him of rape. Or perhaps it was because Jack's band Bleachers is on tour, which means he's away from home a lot. Either way, we're always sad to see a longtime Hollywood love come to an end. Plus, it will be a tough split because the couple shares so many friends. For example, Lena is good pals with Taylor Swift, while Jack is a musical collaborator of hers. We wish them both the best in this tough time!
