Around 7:30 p.m. on March 1, the singer surprised patrons at Joanne Trattoria in NYC, her family's restaurant, and even took time out to act as host by greeting guests and offering cooking critiques.
"I was so surprised to see her!" a guest at the restaurant tells Life & Style. "She wasn't just sitting down, she was really taking charge of the place and making her presence known."
And though she arrived in typical Gaga fashion with two huge bodyguards, the singer, who's known for outrageous costumes, dressed simpler than usual, says the guest: "She looked demure in a long backless black dress, black heels and sunglasses, though she took those off after getting settled."
The guest adds that Gaga made it a point to chat with customers at other tables.
"She acted like she was more at home," the guest tells Life & Style. "She and her family seemed like they were just having a family dinner in their own kitchen, laughing and chatting. She thanked people for coming in and even pointed out pictures of her family on the walls to one table."
The 25-year-old pop star also stopped to talk to the chefs and, surprisingly, gave them a few pointers!
"The meatballs were excellent and served just like they are in Italy, well-done!" she was overheard telling the cooks. "The broccoli, while I enjoyed it, could actually afford to be a little more bland. It has so much flavor on its own. We don't want to mask it. The calamari, it was perfection."
The chefs then brainstormed with her, says the eyewitness, and suggested ways they could change it: "She listened intently and was very involved in the discussion."
Along with it being the one-month anniversary of Joanne's, it was also the birthday of head chef Art Smith -- and Gaga's family made sure to celebrate.
"Art joined Gaga and her family at their table and about five of the staff members brought out a cake and sang 'Happy Birthday,'" the guest tells Life & Style. "Gaga belted it out just like everyone else, and the whole crowd cheered afterward."
