We all know that Riverdale‘s Cole Sprouse is a twin, but back in August, the actor posted a head-scratching Instagram story that had fans thinking he either met his co-star and rumored girlfriend, Lili Reinhart, when they were kids, or that she’s a twin herself! But we’re here to clear up the theories and confusion once and for all.

It all started when the 25-year-old actor posted a throwback photo of himself and his twin brother Dylan alongside a short blonde girl who bared an uncanny resemblance to Lili. So much so, that fans thought it could be a possible twin of Lili’s, as Cole tagged Lili in the photo, adding a bunch of question marks.

While the the girl in the photo could certainly pass for a young Lili, it turned out that she had no connection to the 21-year-old actress. The girl in question is named Anna-Laura, and she’s just a fan like the rest of us. After noticing Cole’s post, she took to Twitter to clear up the rumors and express her excitement, explaining that she ran into the twins while they were “shooting a jet ski scene for a movie.”

Though that mystery was easily solved, there’s one thing that fans are still puzzled about: the status of Cole and Lili’s relationship. Their characters Jughead Jones and Betty Cooper — who are often referred to as a couple by the nickname Bughead — have been dating on and off throughout the first two seasons of the hit drama, and though there have been plenty of rumors and supporting evidence that the pair took the romance off the screen, neither one of them has ever confirmed that they’re dating.

Wishing the happiest of birthdays to my pal, Cole. 💃🏼

“I am one of those guys that’s never ever going to talk about my private life with the public sphere,” Cole explained to Elle last year. “I mean people can talk about the Jughead as much as they want but when it comes to the personal relationships, I have spent much of my life separating work and play so I will continue to do so.” Fair enough — as long as we have more cute Bughead moments, we’ll be okay!
