Life & Style’s reporter Lindsay Hoffman met up with the brains behind @UberFacts, Kris Sanchez -- a 22-year-old who dropped out of college to pursue dance and, instead, ended up creating this phenomenon. Check out the Q&A below!
How did you get the idea to create UberFacts?
I was really bored up in college and instead of studying like a normal person would, I was like, you know what, I’m gonna look up random facts on the internet. I had also just started a Twitter account, but I was never tweeting anything, so I decided to start tweeting the facts that I had been finding.
So you dropped out of school to pursue this?
I originally dropped out of school to start auditioning [to be a dancer]. I decided to move back to NYC and audition. After doing that for a few months and a few dance jobs, I realized that wasn’t what I wanted to do forever. On my free time when I wasn’t auditioning or dancing, I was tweeting. Eventually I stopped dancing and I just kept tweeting.
Do you still dance?
I do. I go out and dance with friends. I’ve gone to a couple of dance classes in the last year, but I’m not what I used to be.
Is there a celebrity you want to dance for?
Britney Spears. She was the first person I ever followed on Twitter.
How long did it take for the page to go viral?
I did this for two years before the account started to gain popularity and then I decided to tweet 24/7 and it exploded.
What’s the secret to a perfect fact?
Anything a person would read and say that’s not true, that’s a great fact.
Do you create tweets to get followers specifically or is it something that interests you?
Anything that is engaging is going to gain followers. If it gets retweeted a lot, more people are going to see it. If it’s really interesting, it will get tweeted a lot more.
What’s next for UberFacts?
We just released an app for the iPhone and an app for the android.
Did you ever think you would have a full time job tweeting?
I never expected it at all. But it was a great surprise.
