Karen Crespo had dreams of becoming a model.
But when Crespo lost all four limbs after contracting bacterial meningitis, those dreams seemed further out of reach than ever before — that is until fashion designer Carrie Hammer came along.

You may be familiar with Hammer’s name. Earlier this year, she had the first ever model in a wheelchair grace her runway at New York Fashion Week as part of her "Role Models, Not Runway Models" campaign.
Crespo was so inspired by seeing the woman rock the runway that she decided to reach out to the fashion designer.

Just like that, Hammer made her dreams a reality and had her walk the runway at New York Fashion Week on Sept. 5. Along with that, she also created a new set of prosthetic arms in collaboration with Hanger, Inc., after someone stole Crespo’s $100,000 prosthetic limbs off her porch.
