We haven’t heard what the Trumps’ plans are for New Year’s Eve, but if they stick to tradition, the President and the First Lady will celebrate the passing year at Mar-a-Lago, their “Southern White House” in Palm Beach, FL. And, Melania will surely be dressed to perfection.
Last year, the 47-year-old wore a black Dolce & Gabbana cocktail dress, ignoring pressure to wear an American designer just weeks before her husband’s inauguration. The sleeveless number featured a scoop neckline, a fitted silhouette, and jeweled bow details on the shoulders — and retailed for $2,995 at Neiman Marcus (before it sold out).
That sartorial decision came amid a boycott from other big-name designers: Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, and Sophie Theallet all refused to dress Melania, according to The Hollywood Reporter. (Tommy Hilfiger, Diane Von Furstenberg, and Calvin Klein were all open to the prospect, though.)
For his part, Stefano Gabbana was certainly glad to see Melania wearing the brand. He shared a photo of her from the event with the hashtags “#DGwoman” and “#madeinitaly.”
The Slovenian model has celebrated New Year’s in high style at Mar-a-Lago quite a few times over the past two decades. In 2000 and 2002, she wore shimmery pink dresses with barely-there straps. And in 2009, she ditched the straps entirely for a white dress with an ornate black bow around the waist. She clearly hasn’t lost her champagne tastes all these years later, so we fully expect her to pull out the stops this Dec. 31 as well.
