Last year, Miley Cyrus was the talk of the town after her risqué performance with Robin Thicke at the VMAs. A year later, she managed to garner just as much attention — but this time it was for a good cause.
The 21-year-old brought Jesse, a young homeless man from LA, as her date to the MTV awards show Sunday night. When she nabbed the Video of the Year win, he accepted the award on behalf of America’s homeless youth.

Speaking with Ryan Seacrest on his radio show this morning, Miley admits it’s because of that controversial performance last year that inspired her to do something moving.
Ariana Grande Debuts Super Sexy Look at the VMAs
“I just didn’t realize my platform, I didn’t realize my power. I really realized it after the VMAs [last year] … there's something special and there’s only few people that experience this that no matter what I do, there’s no winning or losing, it’s just going to be talked about. Period,” she told the American Idol host.

After coming to that realization, Miley decided to use her power to raise awareness for a very important cause.
“There’s going to be talk, so what do I want them to talk about? If I'm going to be given this loud of a voice and this big of an image and this big of a platform and this huge of an opportunity to talk to young people in American right now, what am I really trying to say?” she said. “Because I don’t think what I was trying to say is what happened the year before.”
This moment was so very special to Miley that she kept it a secret — even from famous pal Katy Perry who sat beside her. The “Adore You” songstress said it was almost an impossible feat.
"I'm like, 'This kid has to give this speech!' I’m like, 'Katy, please don’t get Jesse drunk right now' … I didn't want to tell her because I was scared if someone found out, they’d try to stop me … no one knew,” she said, adding that the only person who did know was rapper Juicy J.
Blue Ivy Clearly Won the VMAs
Once Jimmy Fallon announced Miley’s name, she hugged Jesse and brought him up on stage. He said to the crowd full of stars, “I am accepting this award for the 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in the United States who are starving, lost and scared for their lives right now. I know this because I'm one of those people.”
As for the award, the blonde beauty — who, along with many other celebs, was emotionally moved during his words — says it has a wonderful owner: Jesse.
