WARNING: The following post contains graphic images of third-degree burns.
A mother's photos showing her two young son's third-degree sunburns are going viral after the pair were air-lifted to Shriners Hospital for Children due to the severity of their injuries.
Oklahoma resident Shaunna Broadway tells BuzzFeed Life that she dropped her kids, ages 5 and 7, off at day care last Friday and later found them in excruciating pain after a day spent at a local water park.
"[The employees] were actually making fun of my older son, because both boys got sunburns but he was being a ‘baby’ and crying about it,” she says, explaining that staff at Happiness Is a Learning Center admitted to not having sunscreen at the park. They allegedly told the boys to keep their clothes on, but they didn't listen.
Broadway says the heat index was 118 degrees that day, and that the burns began to blister the following morning.
“We took the boys to the local hospital on Saturday, where the doctors lanced the boils and blisters...applied cream, and sent us home with more pain medicine,” says Broadway. "My oldest one’s chest started hurting and he said he was having trouble breathing.”
On Sunday, the duo were flown to Shriners in Galveston, Texas. “The white stuff is Silvadene cream,” Broadway explains of the above picture. “What you can’t see is that there are a bunch of tiny blisters forming on his skin underneath the cream, which is why it looks like that.”
The family has since filed a report with the local police department and are in the process of finding an attorney. “They’re getting better but it’s definitely taking time and it’s been really hard seeing them in so much pain and not sleeping," Broadway shares. "It’s a lot for a mom right now.”
