Ocean’s 8 Trailer: Rihanna and Sandra Bullock Lead All-Star Cast

The Ocean’s 8 trailer is finally here, and it stands as a great expression of female empowerment, bringing together some of the biggest stars in the world, among them Rihanna, Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, and Anne Hathaway. Serving as both a sequel to and spin-off of George Clooney’s Ocean’s trilogy — which grew from 11 to 12 to 13 — it casts Sandra as Debbie Ocean (sister to Danny), and sees her bringing together a gang to pull off a heist at the Met Gala in New York. Viewers will get a chance to see the film when it’s released on June 8, 2018.

In describing the premise of the film, Highsnobiety reports Sandra saying, “It’s a parallel story of another family member that was raised in the same family Danny Ocean was, and what happens when Debbie steps out of jail with all of these amazing, powerful women. We don’t want it to be just for women. This is not a man-hating. We love the men. There’s men in this movie. We love them. But this one heist needs women.”

Sandra Bullock is Debbie Ocean

She is, of course, the sister of George Clooney's Danny Ocean, who pulled together the heists of the past three films. Talking to Entertainment Weekly, she confirms, "Yes, I am Danny Ocean’s sister. I’ve been incarcerated for about five years and you find out why during the course of the film. I mean, that’s sort of a tiny subplot. But… we definitely come from the same family and we’re both very good at what we do in our own special way. So you can only imagine that once I get out, that’s when the heist ensues.”

Cate Blanchett is Lou

The previous films in the series ranged from Ocean's 11 to 13, but this film only features eight stars. Wassup with that? EW.com reports Cate Blanchett as responding, "There's only eight women working in Hollywood." How sad. In a separate interview she added, "There’s this really entrenched and lazy thinking that says there’s a certain demographic who watches films a certain way and that narratives have to reveal themselves — men should be at the core and women should be an objectified part of that process. It’s really deeply uncreative. It doesn’t produce anything interesting for men or women. It’s time to stop talking about these films as 'female' projects, and just call them good and interesting projects, full stop."

Anne Hathaway is Daphne Kluger

For the actress, the making of Ocean's 8 has been an experience unlike any she's had before. "“Even though I’ve been in some female-centric films, I’ve never been in a film like this,” she told Elle. “It just kind of makes you aware of the ways you sort of unconsciously change yourself to fit certain scenarios. It’s not better or worse or right or wrong, but there are certain things you understand about one another because of experiences you have in common … it’s probably easy for men to take that for granted. Just being on a set where I’m the one who possesses that ease is really something. It’s a nice alternative narrative.”

Awkwafina is Constance

There are some major stars in Ocean's 8, and while talking to Hollywood Life Awkwafina explained, "I think the most stress and the most kind of like paranoia I had was before I actually even met them. It was in the days before where I was waking up and being like, ‘Oh my god, I’m going to say something weird, and they’re going to think I’m weird. And I’m going to be weird, and it’s going to get really awkward.’ But I mean, on set I was actually humbled by how humble they are. It kind of turned into a very small family. They were so warm, and they were so welcoming, and I just felt safe with them."

Mindy Kaling is Amita

As famous as the actress has become, she admits to E! Online that during the making of the film, when it came to the paparazzi's response, "With that group of women, I've never felt so unfamous in my life. Like, I thought I was pretty cool. I have my own show. [But] people think I'm Sandra Bullock's assistant and they're like, 'Get out of the way! We need to bring Sandra her matcha tea.' I'm like, 'I'm in a scene with her. I'm not her assistant.' Then I'm like, 'OK! Whatever. I'll give her her matcha tea. Might as well.'"

Helena Bonham Carter is Rose

We're just assuming that Helena's part in this one is going to involve her creating outfits for her and the rest of the team. For her part, the actress isn't talking, though she does comment to Indiewire, "When everyone says, ‘Well, most characters in commercial films can just as easily be played by a woman,’ well, I can tell you, it’s true. That’s what they’ve just done with this."

Rihanna is Nine Ball

In a Vogue video interview, Rihanna admitted that she had some concerns being a part of an ensemble of actresses, buuuut: “We had a blast. I enjoyed mostly the fact that we were eight strong women who are so different from each other. Even in the film our roles are so different. I never thought I would have that much fun at work, on the set of a movie.”

Sarah Paulson is Tammy

The American Horror Story and American Crime Story star is still kind of amazed at the connection that she made with her fellow actresses, telling Entertainment Tonight, “Gary Ross did a really incredible thing with a lot of the movie, but the most important thing is he gathered like eight kickass women and we all really like each other. I mean, I have a text chain going on my phone right now that includes, you know, Cate Blanchett and Sandra Bullock and Mindy Kaling.”
