Former Bachelorette star Peter Kraus may be in the best shape of his life now, but the personal trainer opened up in a very candid post to reveal he once struggled with an eating disorder. Peter, who previously worked as a model, admitted the pressure to be perfect got to him.

“Eleven years ago I began a modeling career that took me all over the world. I called five different cities in three amazing countries home over a six-year span. I met dozens of amazing people with whom I made life long friends and unforgettable memories. But what I am most thankful for from my nine-year career (2 years since retired), is my introduction to fitness,” he wrote on Instagram. “At the age of 20 I had developed an eating disorder while blindly attempting to keep up with the level of fitness of my fellow models and competitors. For two years I struggled in silence, always trying but never knowing how to compete with my counterparts.”

He then went on to detail his turning point. “In the winter of 2007 I hit rock bottom and decided that it was finally time to take charge of my health and fitness and learn how to do things the right way.” Peter, 31, went on to enroll in a dietetics program and would eventually run his first Iron Man triathlon two years later.

Peter continued, “If it weren’t for hitting ‘rock bottom’ I never would have had this amazing hill of life to climb back up. So embrace the s–t sometimes. Learn from it, pick your a– up off the floor and get moving forward and upward again. Sometimes from the darkest places shines the brightest light.”

He is not the first Bachelor Nation star to admit to struggling with an eating disorder. Earlier this year, Bachelor contestant Britt Nilsson revealed she was bulimic while filming the reality dating competition during Season 19. “That’s how intense my addictive nature is,” she said in an emotional YouTube video. “You’re mic’d 24/7 and I would take my mic off and try to hide it under towels so they wouldn’t hear me throw up because then that was going to be the show. That was going to be a plot line and how horrible would that be to be the girl who has an eating disorder.”

Fans showed their support for Peter and thanked him for finding the courage to share his story. “Thank you for such an amazing and inspiring post… More people need to be real about this so we can all learn to love ourselves and see beauty in many different ways,” one follower wrote before another added, “Love the quote, ‘rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.’ Thanks for sharing Peter.” We couldn’t agree more.
