Real Housewives of New York City star Aviva Drescher describes the gruesome accident that took her left foot when she was just 6 years old as "something out of a horror movie." But the reality star tells the new issue of Life & Style that the childhood accident hasn't kept her from thriving. "I could be dead --so who cares if I'm missing a leg!" she tells the magazine, on stands now.
Reliving the incident, Aviva describes, "I was staying at a friend's farm, and we snuck out to ride the conveyor belt in the barn. My foot got stuck in the machine." Many people might never recover from such a traumatic experience, but "I never had a pity party," shares Aviva, 42. "I had this desire and drive to be like everybody else."
Now a stay-at-home mom of four, Aviva has never let her disability hold her back. In fact, at 26, Aviva chose to have elective surgery to remove part of her leg to enable her prosthesis to fit better. Molded from her right limb, Aviva's prosthetic costs a whopping $25,000 and she has two models -- one for heels and one for flats.
"I can change it in 10 seconds," she tells Life & Style. "A few times I've forgotten to bring my flat leg to the Hamptons -- so I'm walking on tippy toes all weekend!" Since the accident, Aviva estimates she's had 50 different legs.
Still, things haven't always been easy. Dating was a challenge, but Aviva's hubby of five years Reid Drescher (a cousin of Nanny star Fran Drescher) accepted her right away. "There are men who aren't attracted to women because they have small boobs or short hair," she notes. "If I told someone and he didn't want to be with me, good riddance!"
But In the end, Aviva believes the nightmarish accident shaped her into the confident woman she is today. "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger," she tells Life & Style.
