We spent an embarrassing amount of our childhood fantasizing about waking up one morning with magical powers and finding a portal to the other realm through our laundry room. But this was mainly due to our obsession with Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Luckily we’ll get to relive the magic with Netflix’s upcoming Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and on May 2 we got our first look at Kiernan Shipka, who we got to see grow up on Mad Men, as Sabrina Spellman!

The photo featured Kiernan rocking a red sweater and thick black headband that brought us right back to the old series. We didn’t expect to feel so nostalgic! Netflix posted the photo with the caption “Welcome to the coven,” and we can’t wait to join.

The casting news was first announced on Jan. 5 and we’ve been excited ever since. “We’re all such huge fans of Kiernan’s work that when we started talking about who this new incarnation of Sabrina could be, her name was on everyone’s wish list,” said executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.

“An empowered young woman, half-human, half-witch, Sabrina is just beginning her dark education as a sorceress, even as she tries to maintain a normal life as a sophomore at Baxter High,” reads the character description. “Intelligent, compassionate and brave to the point of recklessness, Sabrina is all that stands between us and the forces of darkness that threaten our world.” We’re just bubbling with excitement for this!

The original show ended way back in 2003, and since then, we’ve caught an odd re-run here and there on Nickelodeon. But now, Sabrina is coming back with a brand new series. And it’s all thanks to the success of Riverdale.

But, fans of kooky Sabrina Spellman — originally played by Melissa Joan Hart — and Salem the talking black cat will be disappointed to hear that this remake is going to be vastly different from the original… aka it’s gonna be dark AF. And here’s where the Riverdale connection comes in. Both TV shows are based on original Archie Comics series, and thanks to Riverdale’s huge following, bosses at The CW are looking to create spin-off shows for other characters in the Archie universe.

The new series is apparently called The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (creepy, right?) and is based on the story of Madam Satan — Sabrina’s dad’s ex (you got that?) — who’s returned from hell to reap revenge on the Spellman family. A far cry from Sabrina’s teenage dramas at Westbridge High and her on/off romance with the adorable Harvey Kinkle! “This is a darker, more macabre version of Sabrina, and we’re incredibly excited for people to see Kiernan make this iconic character her own,” said Roberto.
