‘Pride and Prejudice’ Stars Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen Are Still the Best Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy

It’s hard to believe it has been nearly 13 years since Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen took on the iconic roles of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. Both stars did Jane Austen’s timeless characters justice in the Joe Wright-directed version, which was released in 2005.

However, Keira revealed that she almos lost out on the role to another famous actress. “He had actually cast someone else in role. Pirates of the Caribbean had come out, and though I was financially a better prospect, he was seeing a lot of press shots where I looked incredibly glamorous and he thought, ‘That isn’t Elizabeth Bennett,'” she told Backstage in 2012. “We had a meeting, and it actually didn’t go very well. But I think the producers really wanted me for the film so they convinced him to meet me again in London. I turned up in my normal clothes, and I’m really very scruffy. And he could see me in the part then. It was like, “Oh, you look like s–t. Well done.'”
