Selena Gomez Sparks Lupus Foundation Donation Frenzy Following Transplant Reveal
Just days after revealing she underwent a kidney transplant, Selena Gomez‘s fans are doing some good as a show of support. Along with inspiring others who might be suffering from similar health issues, it seems Selena has also sparked a huge increase in donations to the Lupus Research Alliance.
According to the CEO of the organization, Ken Farber, phones have been ringing off the hook since Selena’s big announcement. Ken also revealed to E! News that more than $500,000 has been raised thanks to Selena’s efforts. “We love Selena and support her, the Lupus Research Alliance is grateful for her support and we wish her well in her recovery,” the organization tweeted.
In a touching Instagram post, Selena was candid about her struggles with the autoimmune disease — and thanked her BFF for being her kidney donor. “So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health.” she wrote. “There aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed.”
She also made sure to shout out the health organization, which according to Ken, has brought more awareness to the disease in the past days than the what’s been done in the past 25 years. However, this is not the first time the former Disney Channel star has used her star power to raise money for Lupus research.
The “Fetish” singer donated a portion of the proceeds from her Revival World Tour ticket sales to the cause. “This show is so centered around me, and I mean that in a way of confidence, of strength,” she said at the time. “It has a beautiful feel to it, but it is about me, so if I wanted to come in one day and say I want to change [a song in the show] or add this, I can do that. That’s the first time I’ve ever really been able to do that in my life. And I feel, I feel great about it. It’s not me making sure I hit all the dance moves.”
