Maybe love isn’t dead after all? Just days after it was reported that Shakira and her longtime boyfriend, Gerard Piqué, would split after six years together — the soccer star seemingly tried to silence this banter on his Instagram story. The “Hips Don’t Lie” songstress shares two sons with Gerard, four-year-old Milan and two-year-old Sasha. Watch the video to see his latest story update!

“It’s something serious and she has been the one who has finally made the decision,” a source previously told Spanish website Cotilleo of their split, adding Shakira “could no longer cope with the situation.” She allegedly moved out of their Barcelona-based home just ahead of her four-month tour and Gerard’s journey to the 2018 World Cup.

Should they split for good, we imagine the duo will be most worried about the well-being of their boys. Relationship expert Dr. Danielle Forshee — a doctor of psychology and licensed clinical social worker who specializes in high-conflict situations such as relationship and marital problems — exclusively shared with Life & Style how they can help their sons cope.

“The narratives Shakira and Gerard give to their children about why they are apart should be consistent,” she explained. “Because of their ages, both Milan and Sasha are in critical developmental years. Both of their brains are very plastic, meaning they are making new neural connections every single day through experiences with their parents and the world around them. Additionally, Milan and Sasha are experiencing key social and emotional milestones right now, particularly when it comes to healthy attachment bonds to both Shakira and Gerard. These factors are imperative for Shakira and Gerard to understand and consider during this transition, and should be used as a guide for how they will decide to co-parent.”
