This isn’t an episode of TLC’s “I Didn’t Know I Was Pregnant,” but it should be.
Shelby Magnani experienced sharp pains on the left side of her stomach, so like most people, she decided to go to the doctor to see what was going on. Little did she know she was about to receive the shock of a lifetime: she was pregnant.
“They told me I was six months and told me to get down to the ER. They did an ultrasound and told me it was twins,” says Magnani, who found out about the news with her partner, James Croskey, by her side.
Well, she wasn’t six months along — she was 34 weeks! Magnani was immediately taken in for an emergency C-section within hours of complaining about the pain in her doctor’s office.
Her twins weren’t just any twins; they were monoamniotic twins (meaning they share one placenta and one amniotic sac). The fact they survived is a miracle, given the mortality rate is 50%.
Luckily for Magnani and Croskey, twin girls Ava and Anna made their way into the world last Thursday, weighing just four and three pounds each.
Though they’ll be highly monitored over the next several weeks in NICU, the girls are expected to be just fine.
“They’re both just little miracles, it could have been so many things that went wrong that didn’t,” says Magnani. Croskey adds, “I love them, I love them more than anything.”
