When Erynn Johns waded into the open water with a waterproof GoPro attached to a selfie stick, little did she know the equipment would aide in saving her life!
While vacationing at Surfside Beach in Nantucket, the 16-year-old and her parents got caught up in a terrifying rip current that was captured entirely on Johns' camera.
"I was just getting pushed under and then I came up for a second and I was able to breathe, but another wave would come and I'd just go right back under," she tells WCVB-TV of the scary incident.
Johns claims that by holding onto the selfie stick, she was able to make her way towards the shoreline, though a good Samaritan jumped in to help her dad, who had been pulled back further by the giant waves.

Following the ordeal, all three family members were rushed to the hospital, where they made a full recovery. The man who helped save them, Tommy Vach — who happens to be an experienced surfer — is quick to warn against the unpredictable surf.
"It doesn't matter who you are, how strong of a swimmer you are," he tells WCVB. "Rip tides are very dangerous and to fight them can cause fatigue, and you have to keep your wits about you."
According to experts, individuals caught in a rip tide should stay calm and swim parallel to the shoreline until it dies down.
