We Finally Have a Premiere Date for the Final Season of 'Game of Thrones'— Well, Kinda

HBO

And then there was one. Game of Thrones Season 8 will be the final season of the hit fantasy-drama. But, now that the eventful Season 7 finale has aired, fans are left wondering: When will the show be back? The Season 7 finale — "The Dragon and the Wolf" — almost had enough drama packed in to hold us over until Season 8... almost. But, fans of the show are always looking to find out what happens next in the story especially after such a dramatic ending, and now we finally know when they'll get their answers!

The finale ended with the ice dragon aka Viserion burning (icing?) down the wall and letting the White Walkers march through. Remember when Jon Snow wouldn't stop proclaiming that Winter is Here and we must stick together? Well, the not-so-bastard son had a point. Because now, well, they're all dead men walking.

So, what will happen in the upcoming season? Keep scrolling to find out!

When does Game of Thrones Season 8 start?

In a new interview on Jan. 25, Maisie Williams AKA Arya Stark told Metro that we can expect the first episode of the new season to air in April 2019. We already knew that we wouldn't be getting the farewell season until next year, but now we actually have a month to go along with it — and April is a heck of a lot better than December! A few months earlier, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (who plays Jaime Lannister) told Collider that next season started production in October. So, if the show follows its previous schedule, GoT fans had already figured that Season 8 could start as early as April 2019 or as late as July 2019.

Will there be new characters?

Yes — prepare to meet new characters next season. Watchers on the Wall recently released the descriptions of the characters the show is currently casting. They are adding seven new roles: a mercenary, a northern farmer, a "sassy and attractive" Northern girl (possibly a Stark relative?), a northern sentry, a sailor, and two guards. We can't wait to watch these new characters next season!

How many episodes will be in Season 8?

Since HBO decided to split the final 13 episodes into two seasons, Season 8 will consist of six episodes. If that doesn't sound like enough to you there is a chance they will be longer in size. Casey Bloys, HBO's head of programming said, "We haven’t had that discussion yet because I don't know how long the episodes are gonna be. Two hours per episode seems like it would be excessive, but it’s a great show, so who knows?"

Will there be any more seasons?

Season 8 will be the final season of GoT but that doesn't mean that the story is ending. HBO has already announced that they are working on more than one spin-off for the series. But (and this is a big but) creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will not be writing any of them. So, will the new shows be any good? We'll just have to wait and see.

As for what we should do while we wait for Season 8 to air? Mourn Viserion's death and continue to ship Daenerys and Jon, duh.
