We’ve all been there: torn between taking someone back who did us wrong or saying goodbye forever. Luckily, no one is keeping tabs besides our friends and family, while the whole world is watching Selena Gomez. Fans were either horrified or overjoyed when they learned she was back with her notorious ex Justin Bieber, and she’s finally opening up about why it was worth it to her to weather the backlash to have him in her life again.

“I’m 25. I’m not 18, or 19, or 20. I cherish people who have really impacted my life,” she expained of her relationship with Justin in a new interview with Billboard. “So maybe before, it could have been forcing something that wasn’t right. But that doesn’t mean caring for someone ever goes away.” She says that the same goes for her Disney pals like Demi Lovato, Joe Jonas, and Miley Cyrus. “We’ve gone through seasons in our lives. I don’t think it’s as serious as people make things out to be half the time. It’s just my life.”

“I want to live a life that’s worth living,” explains Selena, insisting that she’s going to do what’s best for her, no matter how it looks to the general public. Though that’s all she said about her beau, her relationships with animals also speak volumes as to why she keeps returning to Justin.

While talking about picking out her pup Charlie at the pet store, she revealed what drew her to the precious little spaniel. “Charlie was in the corner. He had his head down and he just seemed really sad, and I loved him,” she said. “I find I do that in every situation in life. I find that person — or dog — and I’m like, ‘Yessss. That’s who I want.'”

Her desire to fix broken creatures showed itself again when she tried equine therapy in Tennessee four years earlier. “There were three horses to choose from, and naturally I went for the emotionally unavailable one.” However, her therapist finally asked her to settle for the nice horse, and that left an impact on her. We just hope Justin has changed as much as she has and is no longer the emotionally unavailable one.
