Fans were absolutely devastated over the May 10 news that cult fave cop comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine was cancelled by Fox. But those fans took to social media and caused such an uproar that TV executives had no choice but to listen, and within hours of the announcement of its cancellation, the show was picked up by rival network NBC for a 13-episode Season 6.

"Hey everyone, just wanted to say no big deal but…. NBC JUST PICKED #BROOKLYN99 UP FOR SEASON 6!!!" show writer Dan Goor tweeted. "Thanks in no small part to you, the best fans in the history of the world! Nine-nine!!!!!!!!!"

Before its cancellation, BNN was raking in more viewers than any other live-action comedy on the channel, including LA to Vegas, The Last Man on Earth, and The Mick (the last two of which were also axed). It even won two Golden Globes, one for comedy TV series and one for actor in a comedy, which is why it was unclear why the network would shut down a show that was edging out all of it's fellow sitcoms on the station.

Unfortunately, the Fox cancellation was a long time coming, and it wasn't not the show's fault. They've been in an uphill battle since the beginning. The show's time slot has been moved mutliple times between Sunday and Tuesday, most recently moving back to Sunday night at 8:30 when another series, Ghosted, didn't work out. It still managed to increase the ratings of that time slot, but apparently that wasn't enough.

See, the show was the last comedy series on Fox that wasn't produced in-house. Instead, it's produced by Universal Television, along with Fremulon, Dr. Goor Productions, and 3 Arts Entertainment. Perhaps that made it more expensive, or perhaps Fox just didn't want to give airtime to outside shows when it has plenty of its own to peddle. Either way, this nearly happened last season as well. Negotiations between Fox and Universal TV were tense, and they just barely earned a fourth season renewal.

In the meantime, fans will still be able to watch the beloved show on TV, albeit in the form of re-runs. Six months ago, the productions companies secured a syndication deal with TBS network, so fans can still get their fix while waiting for the new season.
