For 24-year-old Jacci Sharkey of Queensland, Australia, there’s a big reason why her college graduation from the University of the Sunshine Coast will be a day she’ll never forget.
While sitting in her cap and gown in early October, the young woman’s sister-in-law snapped Sharkey breastfeeding her then six-week-old son, Alek.
The school reached out to the recent grad after they saw the photo and asked permission to post on its Facebook account on Nov. 2. Within just two days, the image has gone viral, earning nearly 200,000 likes and 6,000 shares!
"Just wanted to share a photo from the most recent graduation that I am proud of. I'm extremely proud that with the support of the Uni, during my degree I was able to have 2 babies and still finish my degree. Thanks USC!" the beautiful brunette captioned the photo that was published on USC’s page.
Sharkey wanted to share the image for one reason and one reason only: to prove that any mom can have children and a career.
“It was really a message of thanks and that other mums can do it as well,” she told ABC in Australia. “You don't have to give up the career to have kids and you don't have to give up kids to have the career ... you can have it all."
As for the viral part of it all, she’s nothing short of stunned.
"I never expected it to go crazy. I thought I'd be really happy if it got 100 likes and then it's just gone out of control," she said.
Sharkey, who’s also mom to 20-month-old son Ari, says the overall response has been positive.
"It was really heart warming ... you do come across your keyboard warriors but it's just nice to see the positive outweighs the negative," she says.
To summarize: females like Sharkey give women everywhere a good name.
