Zac Efron was attacked in downtown LA just after midnight Sunday.
A new report claims the 26-year-old actor ended up in the city’s shady Skid Row area and got into a physical altercation with a “sketchy transient," who punched him right in the face.
When cops broke up the fight, which also involved at least three other people, they questioned asked Zac why he was there.
He explained he and a man he identified as his bodyguard ran out of gas and were waiting for a tow truck when the violent encounter occurred.
Zac Efron Secretly Completed a Rehab Stint Months Ago
The Neighbors star claimed he threw a bottle out the window of the vehicle and it shattered near a group of transients. They confronted the two men and when the handsome actor got out of the car to alleviate the situation, one of the guys socked him in the mouth.
“It was the hardest I’ve ever been hit in my life,” he was apparently quoted as saying.
What makes matters worse is a source says the former Disney star, who was in rehab twice last year for cocaine use, was “obviously intoxicated.”
The Skid Row area is known for police being on high alert for drug deals and gangs.
TMZ, the site who broke the news, also reported in November Zac had been “struggling” to stay clean and broke his jaw when he “slipped in a puddle of water at his home.”
As Life & Style reported in September, a friend of the actor’s claimed he’d been partying hard for years leading up to his time in treatment.
The pal alleged he had a knack for marijuana, and while he would “never act too crazy” at parties, it was easy to tell he was “stoned.”

Earlier this year, Zac appeared on Today to promote his film That Awkward Moment and opened up about his difficult year.
“I’m in the best place I’ve ever been,” he said. “I’ve never been this happy before. I’m extraordinarily grateful for these guys [Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller, his co-stars in the film] and to be here promoting this movie… Things are good.”
We’re not so sure he can say that at the moment.
