PDRN Is the Ingredient Your Skincare Routine Might Be Missing
Sometimes a skincare ingredient goes from off the radar to the latest internet trend. Retinol was everywhere at first, then niacinamide had its turn. Now PDRN is in the spotlight. But what’s all the buzz about? Well, for starters, it comes from salmon DNA.
Why Salmon DNA?
PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide (yes, that’s a mouthful). It’s made up of DNA fragments, usually derived from salmon. Research suggests that, once it reaches the skin, PDRN may encourage cell activity and provide building blocks that cells can reuse. The goal of PDRN is to help repair the skin; unlike acids, which exfoliate, and retinoids, which speed up cell turnover, PDRN aims to help skin rebuild itself. It may support collagen production, improve hydration, calm down redness and give the skin a fuller appearance.
In Korea and Europe, it’s been used to speed wound healing and support recovery after skin treatments. Injectable PDRN gained popularity in clinics in Seoul and, as a result, the so-called “salmon sperm facial” went from sounding like a joke to becoming a highly sought-after treatment.
What’s Behind the Hype?
With the latest K-beauty wave, consumers now have access to a more advanced range of formulas. There’s also a focus on protecting the skin barrier and avoiding products that cause stinging or peeling. With the growing popularity of treatments like microneedling and laser therapy, there’s also a rising need for products that support skin recovery without adding irritation.
What to Shop
Consumers can now find PDRN in ampoules, serums, sheet masks, eye creams, overnight masks and even in-office aftercare kits, ranging in price from $20 in a drugstore to $200 for clinical formulations. Brands are increasingly combining PDRN with other ingredients such as peptides, ceramides or growth factors rather than selling it on its own.
Night creams are also popular in the category because skin does its repair work while during sleep. One example is Ludient’s RE-CODE Cream, which contains salmon PDRN together with peptides, ceramides and exosome technology.
Is It Worth A Try?
PDRN isn’t a miracle cure and won’t replace SPF or retinoids, but when skin feels tired, sensitive or is healing, it might be right for resets to fall and winter skincare routines.
