Is Hannah Baker’s story over? With 13 Reasons Why Season 2 rounding out its first full week on Netflix, fans are already anticipating 13 Reasons Why Season 3, and while that may be a bit preemptive — it’s totally understandable.

The second season ended on a grueling cliffhanger, after Tyler Down made an attempt to commit a mass shooting at Liberty High’s Spring Fling — before Clay talked him out of it. In addition, we’re left wondering about the status of Justin’s heroin addiction, how Alex will handle the news that Jessica is still in love with Justin, and what Clay is going to do when the police arrive to see him holding the automatic weapon that Tyler left behind.

The only storyline that feels complete is the Baker family’s. With Hannah’s mom heading to New York to carry out her daughter’s dreams and Hannah’s father moving in with a new family, what else is there to say? Beyond that, Hannah’s ghost (or what viewers presume to be a ghost) surely has to move on to some sort of afterlife, right? Her trial is over, thusly giving her spirit closure, so will we be seeing her come Season 3?

13 reasons why season 3
Netflix

According to Entertainment Weekly, 13 Reasons Why showrunner, Brian Yorkey, said it’s unlikely that we will. “Should we get a Season 3, the loss of Hannah will continue to be the inciting traumatic event for this group of kids and parents. It will always be part of the story,” he explained. “But I don’t see a tremendous continued presence for Hannah because I think we needed her to finish telling everyone else’s side of her story and we needed her so that Clay could get to a point of saying, ‘I love you and I let you go.’ If the story does continue, and certainly there is lots more to know about a lot of these characters, then the spotlight focus on Hannah Baker is probably done.”

Though the series has yet to be picked up for a Season 3 by Netflix, Brian’s explanation makes it pretty clear that we won’t be seeing Hannah. Which, brings us to our next question: Who will become the focal point of the series? Sadly, we’ll just have to wait and see for more details!
