Amid a messy divorce, Angelina Jolie is opening up about her relationship with Brad Pitt before their split — and admitted that working together again may not have been the best idea. The couple famously met on the set of their movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith, but when Brangelina attempted to act as a married couple once more in By the Sea in 2015, things didn’t go as smoothly.

“We had met working together and we worked together well… I wanted us to do some serious work together… I thought it would be a good way for us to communicate,” she said on The Hollywood Reporter‘s podcast Awards Chatter. “In some ways it was, and in some ways we learned some things. But there was a heaviness probably during that situation that carried on and it wasn’t because of the film. It was something that we were dealing…things happen for different reasons, and things…why did I write that exact piece? Why did we feel that way when we made it? I’m not sure.”

She continued, “A piece of art can be something that’s healing or something that’s difficult. I don’t know. I’m glad we did that film because we did explore something together. Whatever it was maybe it didn’t solve certain things, but we did communicate something that needed to be communicated to each other.”

And it looks like Angie, 42, wants to keep up that communication. In Touch recently reported that the Oscar-winning actress is delaying her divorce from Brad, 53, because she wants to reconcile despite Brad making it very clear he just wants the marriage to be over. “In hopes of getting Angie to sign off on the divorce, Brad started throwing huge financial settlement offers at her lawyer,” the source said, adding that the brunette beauty rejected them all.

Angelina was the one who originally filed for divorce back in 2016 amid claims Brad physically abused their oldest son, Maddox, sparking an investigation with the LA County Department of Children and Family Services.

“Brad felt he was depicted as an alcohol-swilling, pot-smoking, irresponsible and abusive husband and father — and that it was largely Angelina’s doing. He was shamed and humiliated,” the insider added. “Brad feels too much damage has been done and she’s tormented him for too long to consider taking her back. He doesn’t trust Angelina anymore.”
